Willow Smith Set to Play in Annie; is This Diana Ross And The Wiz All Over Again

I never realized how much people hate The Wiz until I casually mentioned it to a co-worker of mine a few years back.  She never let me hear the end of it, but I think the real issue is the fact that we ever had the audacity to recreate a classic with Black actors, and on top of that didn’t do that great of a job of it.  But The Wiz is a classic to me, our classic, regardless of who hates it.  Plus I still like The Wizard of Oz.

The same may happen if Willow Smith does not deliver in a remake of Annie which has Jay-Z involved, (yet again, as she is signed to his label and he is responsible for her infectious single); another ghetto classic will be produced, and mainstream America will hate it and never let us hear the end of it.  I must admit, we are arrogant; Jay-Z had a lot of nerve to sample a song from the musical and make a hit record off of it, but do we ever learn?  For one the nepotism of having Willow Smith in a movie in which she does not have to act is the beginning of the end.  Then again it worked with her brother on a remake of The Karate Kid, and I did not support that movie and I have no interest in supporting this one.

We need our own movies, not carefully selected movies from the vault that we can exploit because we are out of fresh ideas.  I do not want to see another lousy musical on the big screen, particularly seeing that I haven’t seen a decent musical since Chicago.  But then again I cannot say that I am surprised, apparently Beyonce scored a role in a Clint Eastwood remake of an old film.  She still owes me $8.50 from when the last film of hers I wasted money on, and that was a remake as well …
