It was announced on the January 10th, 2011 episode of WWE Monday Night Raw that Shawn Michaels would be inducted into the Hall of Fame on April 2nd, 2011.
To be honest, I am a little bummed that I will not be there for it. If I could, I certainly would. But at the same time, I am so proud of Shawn. I usually write general articles on here. Crafts, shopping, holidays, and so on. So not many people around here know what a fan I am of this man…..
Shawn Michaels has been my all-time favorite professional wrestler since 1996. I watched wrestling a little as a child, but I was not a diehard fan until I was 11 years old. You can thank Shawn for that. We were snowed in for a few days and my brother had the Royal Rumble on tape, which aired earlier that month. I saw Shawn Michaels wrestle and the rest is history. I was basically hooked.
I can’t tell you what it was that got me hooked, because it was so many things. Thinking back, it seemed to happen so fast. It’s almost like I blinked and became a huge fan of this man. The more I saw of Shawn, the more I became a fan of him. It’s his in-ring talent, his work on the microphone, the “Sexy Boy” gimmick, the entrance, the music, the outfits, and everything in between! We didn’t have cable at the time, so I saw his pay per views and Raw episodes for 1996 on tape. I remember watching his Iron Man Match with Bret “Hitman” Hart, his promo the night after, his feud with The British Bulldog, and so much more. When we got satellite television in 1997, I watched and taped Raw every week for awhile. I still have those tapes today and it’s fun to go back and remember when Shawn did this and when Shawn did that.
There are so many matches of Shawn that I love. There are many people consider to be their favorites. Shawn Michaels vs. Ric Flair, Shawn Michaels vs. John Cena, and of course Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker. One of my favorites has always been Shawn Michaels vs. Psycho Sid at the 1997 Royal Rumble. Shawn wrestled with the flu and won back the WWF Championship in his hometown of San Antonio, TX.
When Shawn Michaels retired in 1998, I remember still referring to him as my favorite wrestler. Every time he made a random appearance to announce or referee, I was so excited! Hearing that theme music hit and watching him make an appearance was always a pleasant surprise!
I realize that Shawn is not a perfect person. He has made his share of mistakes like any of us. Do I pretend he is perfect? Of course not. Have I always forgiven him and remained a loyal fan? Yes I have. For 15 years, I have stuck by this man. Through the ups, downs, the good, the bad, a screw job, four-year retirement, face turns, heel turns… everything. Shawn Michaels may not be perfect, but he is and will always be my all time-favorite wrestler and my favorite celebrity in general.
If I told you all I didn’t miss seeing Shawn Michaels every Monday night, I would be lying. But if I also told you I wasn’t happy for him during his retirement, I would be lying then too. Shawn has given his all to this business, and I am glad he now has the time to spend with his wife and children. He deserves it.
Whether I can be there in person or if I have to watch it from my living room, I will be tuning into the WWE Hall of Fame Ceremony on April 2nd, 2011 to see Shawn’s induction!
Congratulations to The Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels!
Thank you Shawn. For everything you have done for the wrestling business, and for adding a little spark to the lives of all of your fans!
