Ground-Zero Mosque?

If you didn’t already know, Ground Zero is the name given to the site of the 9/11 attacks, and to say that this ‘Mosque’ is built right next to it is going a bit too far.  The building is four, almost five blocks away from the 9/11 memorial sight, and completely obscured by taller buildings surrounding it.

A Mosque is a Muslim place of worship, and only worship. What is planned to be built in 45 Park Place is a thirteen story tall community center open to all New Yorkers. It will house a basketball court, a swimming pool, and other facilities, with an added prayer space. It sounds more like a Muslim YMCA with an added place of worship to me.

Saying that this building would be “a training ground for terrorists” as protesters say is not only ridiculous, but hypocritical. To be honest, there are more examples of extremism in America from non-Muslims than there are Muslim. One of the great examples has happened with a few days. Pastor Terry Jones confirmed that on 9/11 he plans to lead the burning of 200 copies of the Muslim holy book at his Dove World Outreach Centre in Gainesville, Florida. After multiple death threats and ignored calls from Senator Hillary Clinton, he confirmed that he would be armed for the event and said “We are prepared to give our lives for this.” I don’t know about you, but the last time I checked the word extremist in the dictionary, Pastor Terry Jones fit perfectly under that definition.

The amount of religious discrimination in this country is disgusting. I think that the building of Park 51 is less of an insult to 9/11, but a sign of religious tolerance. If America doesn’t maintain its first and most important amendment, then what have we become?
