It was a welcome piece of good news when on November 16th the engagement of Prince William and Kate Middleton was announced. The wedding day is an official bank holiday and an event that will be watched all over the world. Kate Middleton has proved to be a popular public figure and has become somewhat of a style icon. There is a lot of speculation about what she will be wearing on the big day, but one thing we can discuss already is her engagement ring.
Most of us thought it was very touching when we heard that Prince William gave Kate the engagement ring that belonged to his mother Princess Diana. It was a lovely sentiment that in some way he wanted his mother to share in the joy of the occasion. The ring was first given to Diana by Prince Charles on their engagement in 1981. It is a beautiful ring which was expensive then costing £30,000 and no doubt is worth even more now. It is not surprising that Prince William was nervous about carrying it around with him for some time prior to the proposal.
The ring is composed of 14 white diamonds which encircle an 18-carat oval sapphire. It can be seen how beautiful the ring is on the photographs that have been released of the happy couple. In the photos released on the day the engagement was announced she is wearing a beautiful blue dress which complements the colour of the ring’s sapphire. The style of the ring will no doubt become very popular and very similar rings are already being made for those who wish to follow in Kate’s footsteps.
