The Greatest American Hero: Lilacs, Mr. Maxwell

The Greatest American Hero: Lilacs, Mr. Maxwell is the last show of the second season and as the title might indicate, there is some sweet aroma of romance involved for FBI agent, Bill Maxwell as played by I Spy’s Robert Culp.

A bit oddly in my book, in the prior episode Bill had asked his superhero partner, Ralph Hinkley (William Katt), if he could date his mother (played by Katt’s real mom, Barbara Hale).  Now he’s actually the closest he’s ever been to a love affair since the show began.

Dixie Carter is absolutely delightful as the woman at the center of Bill’s attentions.  She plays another FBI worker by the name of Samantha O’Neill.  I actually loved listening to her talk in this show, and I can’t explain why.  Maybe because she was putting on the charm, giving off that Southern sensation without the sass of her Designing Women character.

Culp and Carter had an unexpected chemistry as well.  It’s probably the most I’ve liked watching Culp in this kind of story.

As for the plot, it was good, slightly surprising, and very entertaining.  I have to admit that there is a nice bit with a dog that I enjoyed a great deal, too.
