The Time Tunnel: The Day the Sky Fell In was the 4th episode of this science fiction series, and it is one that has stayed with me over the many years since it aired originally. Part of the fascination is because it is one of the few episodes that lets a member of the operation confront his own past or destiny.
The plot has Dr. Tony Newman (James Darren) and Dr. Doug Phillips (Robert Colbert) landing at Pearl Harbor the day before Japan attacked Hawaii. As he makes the connection, Newman realizes that his father is still alive and that he could see him.
As it happened, Newman was a young boy who survived the attack, though his father, a Navy officer, had been reported missing after it. There’s an excitement in the air when Newman becomes aware that he would now have a chance to see his father alive once again.
The drama in this hour is among the most intense and personal of the season. Darren delivers a fantastic performance, especially at the end when he tells his father who he is. My heart raced and ached, all at the same time. It was just highly emotional and very special to watch.
