How to Survive Joblessness

Joblessness is something that no one wants to face, but in this tough economic time many have to. Just because you are out of a job though does not mean you cannot survive and thrive during this hard time. However, there are some things you need to do in order to come out of unemployment on top.

Eliminate Expenses

When you are trying to get through unemployment, the first thing you need to do is preserve the money you do have. Start turning off extra things like cable and internet and cut out things like eating out and daily Starbucks runs until you have found a job. Remember that you never know when you will be hired again and so you want to stretch every dollar you have in your emergency fund. You can always turn the cable back on when you have a job again.

Start Making Money

Just because you are jobless does not mean you cannot make money. There are literally hundreds of things you can do to earn money while you are unemployed. You can babysit, mow lawns, donate plasma or even freelance doing what you normally do. It doesn’t really matter how you do it, just make sure you are bringing in some form of income so you can financially survive unemployment.

Keep a Schedule

It can be very easy to just stay at home and stop looking for work when you are unemployed. So set a schedule for yourself every day to get things done. Decide when you are going to go looking for work, what you are going to do to earn some money that day and fill the rest of the day in with other things you need to do. By keeping a schedule, you will help fight depression and ensure you stay productive throughout your time without a job.

Look Everywhere for Opportunities

Always keep your eye out for unadvertised opportunities. Most open jobs are never advertised online or even with a sign in the window, so be sure to constantly be looking and asking for job opportunities. Remember that even a trip to the grocery store could end with a fateful meeting. So always dress nicely where ever you go to make a good impression. Also, make sure to let your friends and family know you are looking for work so they can help you with your job hunt as well. Don’t underestimate the power of everyday opportunities.

Ask for Help

If you find yourself in a difficult situation, do not be shy about asking for help. If you are doing everything you can to find work and provide for your family then do not feel guilty if you need to file for unemployment or ask a family member for a little help. It is important to swallow your pride in order to get through these hard times. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness, so if you are in need make sure to ask.

Have a Little Fun

Finally, make sure during your time of unemployment that you have a little fun. Many people do not think they can or should have some fun while they are unemployed because of a lack of money. However, there are plenty of free things you can do to have fun. Go to the library and rent a book or movie, go see a free outdoor concert, visit a museum or go have a picnic with your family. Fun is important to keep your spirits up during this hard time, so do not forgo it because of a lack of funds.

So if you find yourself out of a job, there are things you can do to help you survive a layoff. Find ways to save and make money, ask for help, make a schedule and have fun. By doing these things you will help yourself stay mentally and financially afloat until you find your new job. Remember, these hard times are temporary and you will see the good times again.
