The Mothers-in-Law: It’s a Dog’s Life was a cute little outing for this comedy series, although it drove me a little batty at the end.
Here’s the thing that bugged me, and it’s one that has happened more than once in this series. They don’t really have complete endings. By this I mean that there are loose ends, things that don’t get a full conclusion but that viewers are apparently just supposed to forget about.
In this episode, Suzie and Jerry Buell, the newlyweds who are also expecting their first child, decide they are going to get a dog, too. Naturally, the mothers-in-laws can’t agree on what kind of dog it should be and spend a lot of time arguing.
Ultimately, each of the mothers, played by Eve Arden and Kaye Ballard, secretly gets a dog for the kids. The newlyweds end up telling their parents to choose one, but only one.
By the time we get to the end, we love the dogs, who are adorable, but there is no choice. What’s more, we never see or hear about the dogs again. So, what happened? There is no proper resolution, and that drives me nuts.
John Byner guest starred in the show and had some good bits as an animal control worker.
