Scheveningen, The Netherlands – At 12.00 pm sharp 10.000 participants of the Unox New Years dive ran from the Kurhaus towards the North Sea to plunge in to the ice cold Dutch waters. All participants wore a woolen hat sponsored by the largest meat snack (knakworst, bratwurst, frankfurter, wiener) producers in the Netherlands. 2011 brought 2.000 more participants than last year. In Holland the Nieuwjaarsduik is broadcast live oin television.
10.000 took the plunge but at least another 30.000 – according to the Scheveningen Police force – came to view the spectacle of wildly dressed – some even hardly dressed – crazy bunch of people. The whole event takes less then 15 minutes but the crowds gather from early morning and party till late at night. First Aid and hospital crews stand by to deliver assistance if needed.
The New Years dive has become a real phenomenon around the globe. At many cities now people take the dive to bless the New Year and head of with a cold start into the icy cold water. In the Netherlands alone in various cities 30.000 took the plunge.
