How to Survive a Night of Babysitting

Not knowing what to expect can cause anxiety but babysitting doesn’t have to be a big deal and you don’t have to let it overwhelm you.  Before you babysit a child, or several children, it is important to know the gender and age of the child or children, as well as where you will be babysitting the children.  It is easiest if you are babysitting at the child’s home, because they will be in their comfort zone and everything they need, such as food, a bed or toys will all be readily available.  Once you know the age and gender of the child or children then you can plan some fun things to do, which will keep them occupied.

If a child is bored that is when they will start to act out to get your attention, so come up with a plan and let the child know.  For example, if the child likes ice cream and the parents will allow them to have one scoop, then you can tell them that you will play a few games, eat the ice cream and then watch a movie before bed.  By doing this, the child will know when they can have their ice cream, and they won’t be nagging you all night to have ice cream.  By having a schedule that they are informed about, they also won’t be surprised when it is time to go to bed, and therefore will be more willing to go to sleep than if you were playing a game and suddenly told them it was bed time in five minutes.

Board games are also a great thing because you can play with multiple children, and there are many board games which are great for kids who are five years old, or twelve years old. This will allow you to easily keep an eye on the children without running from the computer room, where one child is, to the television room, where another child is.  Board games are also great because you can play as well, so you aren’t simply standing over them like a statue, watching as they do something else, such as play on the computer.

There are also great video game options.  With the Nintendo Wii, Xbox Kinect, and Play Station Move all offering great video games that allow users to get off the couch and be active, you can easily keep kids entertained, while at the same time keeping them active.  This is great because these games are a lot of fun, and the physical activity will wear them out, making bed time less stressful.

The options are endless, and if you just go into babysitting without being stressed you will see that it is not only an easier task than likely anticipated, but it can be a lot of fun and very fulfilling.
