Walnuts are very valuable nuts belonging to the deciduous plant of the family Juglandaceae. There are many varieties of the plant of which the most popular ones are the California black nut, English walnut, Buttermut, American black walnut, Demon walnut and so on. The meat of this nut consists of two bumpy lobes that add crunchy flavor to dishes. These nuts are harvested around the month of December, but are available and consumed all round the year. When stored properly, they can be kept fresh for a year or more. walnuts have wrinkled brain like appearance of their shell and hence also called as” brain food”.

Walnuts are considered to be the best source of protein, fiber, vitamin B, vitamin E and magnesium.  Walnuts have high amounts of omega3 fatty acids compared to other nuts and have lot of medicinal and health benefits. Fish also contains omega 3, but omega-3 found in walnuts and walnut oil is different to the type found infish. Walnut contains alpha linolenic acid while fish contains EPAand D HA omega-3.

It reduces the risk of heart disease.  It improves the artery function by improving blood vessel elasticity and plaque accumulation.

It aids in lowering LDL cholesterol. It contains less than 4 gram of saturated fats per 50gm.

 It makes bones healthy and lower blood sugar levels.

Eating few walnuts before meal can decrease appetite and can cause people to eat less. Walnuts are very high in nutrition and hence provide a good dose of daily nutrients, which is essential for the growth and peak brain functioning

Regular consumption of walnuts can reduce the risk or delay the onset of this degenerative, incurable and terminal disease called Alzheimer’s.
