Some characteristics of false shepherds are as what follows.
1. Instantiate and Pleasure-loving
Isa 56:10-12 His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber. Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter. Come ye, say they, I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and to morrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant.
2. Scatter the Flock
Jeremiah 23:2 Therefore thus saith the LORD God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people; Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them: behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the LORD.
3. Lead the Sheep astray
Jeremiah 50:6 My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their resting place.
4. Prey upon the Flock instead of feeding it
Ezekiel 34:2-3 Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD unto the shepherds; Woe be to the shepherds of Israel that do feed themselves! should not the shepherds feed the flocks? Ye eat the fat, and ye clothe you with the wool, ye kill them that are fed: but ye feed not the flock.
Zechariah 11:17 Woe to the idol shepherd that leaveth the flock! the sword shall be upon his arm, and upon his right eye: his arm shall be clean dried up, and his right eye shall be utterly darkened.
5. Hirelings forsake the Sheep
John 10:12 But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scatterers the sheep.
Jesus already set the example for us in all things. He began His ministry after His baptism (not for any personal unrighteousness, but as our Great High Priest to fulfill all righteousness or to show us the way) and was tempted by the Devil, yet He overcame him by strict adherence to the word of God. He preached the Gospel, healed many by prayer and walked according the Spirit. In the end, Jesus lived and died so that He might bring all to God and bind the great oppressor. His resurrection now frees all who now believe in Him from all sin and Satan. Any true man of God will deny himself and take up Christ’s cross following His ways. After all, John the Baptist or Baptizer said it best when saying that, “He must increase, but I decrease.” As every student is not above his master, but will be like him in many ways. A true shepherd will serve God and love the brethren, knowing them individually. He will seek God daily and given his best effort to supply their spiritual needs. All false shepherds are indeed sent by Satan to kill, steal and destroy. We are told that all leaders must follow every word of God and not the traditions of man. They must not be one verse wonders, nor follow anything not directly written within the Scriptures. If people would follow exactly what the word of God says instead of the word of man implies, the world would see true Christianity abounding today. Too many people simply want to follow a feel good religion that neither offends nor moves anyone, that’s without or devoid of power (by applying the name of the Lord Jesus Christ in all things everyone can have His power).
