Everyone knows that nothing compares to experience. When the chips are down, we look for the ones who can get the job done, the ones who know what to do and how to solve the problems. Ten thousand baby boomers a day may be turning 65 and retiring but we can expect to see many great things begin to happen as leaders, innovators and go-getters emerge from the boomer generation and begin to take charge. They have been referred to by many names, “the big boys,” “the A team”, “the old dogs” and call them what you will, whatever fits, they are the baby boomers and nothing beats a classic.
Boomers are old school, tough and they have been to hell and back. This is the type of General we call upon, the men and woman we need and expect to lead us into battle and to victory. There has never been a better time than now for the boomer to step up and show the world how it’s done.
The baby boomer still has more to contribute, more to invent and more to give the world at this time so expecting to settle down, grow old and die should sound and feel like nonsense to most. Boomers stand to inherit trillions of dollars as parents and grandparents begin to depart. A lot of good can and will be done with all that money because past mistakes in the life of the boomer, (and there have been many), will have been learned and this time, all that money will be saved, built and spent on bigger, better and wiser things.
Yes, the boomer has failed, gone bankrupt and lost so much throughout his life but history and experience will have taught the great boomer the way to build it faster and acquire it all over again quicker.
Back to the Future
We have all said at one time in our lives that we “wish we could go back and do it all over again and that we would do it better”. Well, this is the chance to do just that, a chance to go back to the future and change the time continuum without catastrophic consequences. Getting yourself back in shape or better shape is the perfect motivator to prepare you to enter a new chapter in your life which will be much better than the first chapter.
Preparing for your retirement should include more than just financial planning. The physical and emotional aspect is more important because if you are not physically fit and emotionally prepared then what good is your retirement and money going to be? If you retire at 65 and worked for thirty plus years then you want to live longer afterwards than you actually worked.
Think about it… you have the chance to actually live almost another life time.
Staying in top physical shape should be a must in everyone’s life and more importantly to the boomer. If you have been idle for many years and you have not seen your waistline since High School, then it is never too late to begin a physical fitness program and get back down to your fighting weight.
As you get closer to actually retiring and not having to get up and go to work, you should begin to dream, plan and prepare for what you want to do for the rest of your life. Planning to go Fishing and play golf every day when you retire will last about three months and then boredom and thoughts of, “there has to be more to life,” will set in. This is where people who do not plan for retirement grow old and die too early.
So boomer, what are you going to do for the next thirty plus years when you retire? Remember, this is your wish come true and the time you have to go back in time, back to the future and do it all over again and your second chance to do it better.
Our Deepest Fears by Marianne Williamson
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. You playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
It is the time to start dreaming and believing in the possibilities of achieving the impossible. Never has there been a better time than now to shine brighter than you ever have in your life. It is the perfect time NOT to hold back, be timid or afraid to finally patent that invention that helps the world be a better place, write that book or build greatness. Now is the time to prepare to leave your mark, your history and your legacy. How will you be remembered baby boomer?
Dare to be great!
