Welcome: New Year 2011

Today is first day of English New Year-January 1 of the English Calendar year 2011. Leaving behind all successes and failures, joys and sorrows in the treasury of the past, entire nation is set to greet English new year today amid unbounded hopes and reiterating pledges of building “Sonar Bangla” as dreamt by the Father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. We welcome the new year.

The year 2010 witnessed many ups and downs in both political and social arenas. Almost hand in hand ran shadows of tragic incidents and accidents-one coming as more traumatizing than the forerunner. Besides, compared to the last few years, Bangladesh passed through numerous big events-both of joys and sorrows, moving one to cheers, or fears and tears.

At least 121 people, most of them women and children, burnt alive and 150 others injured in a biggest-ever fire incident that erupted from a chemical warehouse at Nimtoli of old Dhaka in June.

Different socio-cultural and educational institutions across the city have chalked out elaborate pragrammes on the occasion of English new year 2011.

President, Prime Minister, leader of the opposition in the Jatiya Sangsad have greeted the country men on this auspicious occasion.

National of flags will be hoisted atop all government and private buildings. Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television and all private TV channels will broadcast special programmes and all news papers will publish special supplements highlighting the significance of the day.

Law-enforcing agencies have strengthened the security measures with an aim of resisting any kind of unpleasant and untoward incident centering around observance of English new year across the city. Besides strict vigilance on all entertainment spots including Patenga Sea beach, burning of all sorts fire-works have burn declared prohibited by the CMP authority.

Additional security forces have been deployed at the strategic points of the city and members of the elite force-RAB are put on alert at hotels, motels and other sensitive places.
