It can prevent the ‘ovulation’, the release of a matured egg from the ovary, from taking place and would also alter the constituents of the cervical mucosa as well as the lining of the endometrial tissues so as to prevent implantation of a fertilized egg and the penetration of a male sperm. Furthermore, the drug can also be used in the treatment of moderate acne in women who are at least 14 years of age in case there is a necessity to prevent pregnancies as well.

What are its side effects?

The drug although well tolerated among many will show side effects that are pretty much similar to the side effects of other contraceptive tablets which contain hormones. Thus, while certain side effects are considered to be mild and would be tolerable, certain other side effects are considered dangerous and needs urgent medical attention.

What are the serious side effects to watch out for?

Being a prescription only drug, Ocella should be taken after considering the physical state of the person and any past medical conditions which would deem Ocella dangerous in a particular person. One of the most important and dangerous conditions that can manifest with this drug would be the possibility of blood clot formation in blood vessels which supplies vital organs. Thus, the brain, heart, eye, kidneys and liver, intestines…etc can be victimized by these drugs in susceptible persons. Therefore, following side effects needs to be watched out for and its presence should prompt the users of these drugs to contact their doctor urgently and seek remedial action.

Thus, the dangerous side pertaining to blood clotting and other related effects would be,

  • Loss or alteration of vision, hearing, speech…etc

  • Skin discoloration and appearance of excess body hair

  • Loss of scalp hair

  • Changes in the menstrual periods…etc, can be considered side effects related to this drug as well.

Although there are number of side effects possible when using conraceptives such as Ocella, if the risks and benifits are carefully weighted, these effects can be minimized in many women.
