Twelve Point Diet to Combat Psoriatic Arthritis

Psoriasis is a dangerous skin disease. It is commonly found with patchy, raised, red areas of skin inflammation with scaling. When it affects the joints it is called psoriatic arthritis. Psoriasis generally affects the tips of the elbows and knees, the scalp, the navel, and around the genital areas or anus. Psoriatic arthritis often occurs in the fourth and fifth decades of life both in male and female. 

Diet for psoriatic arthritis

Psoriatic arthritis is a disease that troubles the patients very much. Diet has much to do in increasing the conditions of the disease Hence a diet to combat psoriatic arthritis is recommended.

Twelve Diet tips to combat psoriatic arthritis

1) Avoid food that can be harmful if consumed with medicines taken for psoriatic arthritis. For example, grapefruit can contradict some medicines. It is better to check with the doctor for food-medicine relation.

2) Eat regularly to keep up the energy levels and fight the fatigue that often accompanies psoriatic arthritis. Inclusion of cereals, pulses and vegetables in the meals is recommended.  

3) Have more milk and fruits. Choose fruits and vegetables that are brightly colored. They are loaded with fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants which can reduce inflammation in the joints.

4) Limit high-fat and high-cholesterol food such as red meat and organ meats have to be avoided. Fish especially fatty fish and chicken can be taken instead of them.

5) The quantity of meals taken should be distributed evenly. Besides breakfast, lunch and dinner, two small snacks can be taken in between.

6) Beware of sugar and salt. Use them moderately. Herbs and spices can be used to flavor the foods.

7) Add plenty of supplements. Fish oils are beneficial in reducing inflammation and the afflictions of psoriatic arthritis.

8) Have omega-3-rich food such as salmon, herring and mackerel. Eggs, canola and flaxseed oils also are recommended for psoriatic arthritis.

9) Include lot of garlic and ginger in your foods. They are known to have anti-inflammatory properties.

10) Eliminate foods that may cause an allergic response. Certain foods such as red meat, citrus fruits worsen the effects of psoriatic arthritis. Vegetables and fruits belonging to the nightshade family such as tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and egg plant are troublesome for this. Tobacco, alcohol and food additives also worsen psoriatic arthritis. 

11) Besides diet, exercises also have much to do in reducing the effects of psoriatic arthritis. They reduce fatigue and pain, increase flexibility of joints and reduce stiffness of limbs in the mornings. They increase mobility and improve body functions. They control weight and are good for heart. But consultation with the doctor regarding the exercises is necessary.

12) Sleep plays a vital role in maintaining diet. Fatigue often accompanies psoriatic arthritis increasing pain. Rest and sleep are necessary for reducing the pain of psoriatic arthritis. This will affect emotionally also. It is also advised that the patient may take one two naps.
