The star led the Magi to Bethlehem. They found Jesus in the manger and adored him. Prophets and Apostles were stars leading people to Jesus. Now it is our turn to be the stars!
The mission of the star at Bethlehem was to lead people to Jesus in the manger. It led the wise and the innocent to the manger to find the Messiah.
“After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, ‘Where is the child who has been king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage’” (Matthew 2:1-2) Here we find the mission of the star is to lead people to Jesus.
Mission of the prophets
The mission of the prophets in the Old Testament was to show Israel the way to the Messiah of the world.
Jeremiah prophesized about the Messiah thus, “The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land” (Jeremiah 23:3).
Prophet Micah asserted, “But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days… and he shall be the one of peace” (Micah 5:2-5).
John the Baptist spoke about Jesus, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me.’ I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel” (John 1: 29-31) He pointed out the Messiah.
The star that led the Magi
“When they saw the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh” (Matthew 2: 10-11). They pointed out the birth of Messiah to Judea and the world.
Apostle Philip was a star of Jesus
In the life of the Apostle Philip we find him leading others to Jesus. Once he met Nathaniel and told him about Jesus. He led him to Jesus and Nathaniel declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” (John 1:49)
At another time we find Philip leading the Ethiopian official to Jesus. He proclaimed the good news about Jesus and baptized him.
We are the stars
Our life of faith will be complete only when we move aiming Jesus in our lives, and also when we lead others to Jesus. When we lead others to Jesus we can enjoy the overwhelming joy which the Magi felt that day. We are the stars of Jesus in our families and in our communities. Parents are the stars to their children. But often they abdicate or renounce their mission causing the spiritual path of their children filled with gloom and darkness!
Let us be stars of Jesus
Our Christian mission is to be stars of Jesus. “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Let us be the stars of hope.
“Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you” (Is. 60: 1)
