The Mothers-in-Law: The Match Game is the second outing of this comedy series’ second season on NBC. It featured Paul Lynde in a guest starring role as the owner of a dating service, one that matches up potential couples.
Jerry works for Wally Logan (Lynde) part time, but he’s in danger of losing his job because business is bad. Since wife Suzie is pregnant, the in-laws all decide to fake their appearances and IDs and sign up with the service to try to save the company from going under.
This episode is one of the larger ones for Jerry Fogel as the young newlywed. He and Deborah Walley, who play Suzie, are the supporting players to Eve Arden, Kaye Ballard, Herbert Rudley, and Richard Deacon. Every now and then, though, they get a bit more to do, as in this half hour.
Lynde is funny, but a bit more sedate than anticipated. Maybe it’s because he’s somewhat drowned out by Ballard in their scene together. Ballard was terrific, but sometimes she could overdo it, and that’s pretty much how I feel about her scene at the company here.
Still, it’s a nice half hour with some good laughs, and it’s always good to see Lynde doing his thing.
