A lot of fish gets eaten in my house by the boys and we usually by the breaded variety but for some reason I spotted these battered ones and though I would give them a try as I change is always good. I have to say they were a massive success and were all eaten within a few minutes of me serving tea!
The fish comes in a blue and white box which has the Young’s logo on the top and the product name, there is also a picture of one of the fish portions on the front. The back of the box has all the cooking instructions and the nutritional values along with the ingredients. The sides of the box are plain blue. The opening of the box is slightly different as there is a tab on the top side which is to be pulled and this removes the middle section of the front of the box to allow you to see the fish inside.
~~COOKING AND RESULTS~~
The fish is very simple to cook and this can be done in two ways, firstly they can be grilled for 20 minutes on a medium heat and turned over half way through cooking but this is how my Nan cooked hers and it ended up cooked on the outside and still frozen on the inside. I decided to oven bake mine and to do this the fish is to be placed on an oven dish and cooked for 20minutes on Gas mark 8, 230 Deg.c or 450 deg.f.
When I opened the box I saw 6 very small fish pieces, I was actually shocked by how small they were at first, they were a light yellow colour and as they were frozen they were very hard. Once cooked they did change to a more golden colour and the batter did expand slightly making it more lighter, bubbly and crispy. Fortunately the fish portions did not shrink when cooked.
The taste test was the best bit as they were lovely. The batter was very light and crispy to east and when eaten with the soft fish inside the contrast was good. The fish tasted great and actually of fish, very much like fish fingers. I did not find any bones in the fish which was good as my boys were eating them at the same time. The whole piece was a good size for my youngest boys to share but hubby and my eldest did need two of the portions each. I had to do with 1 as there was only 6 in the box!
The fish did not crumble or fall apart once cut which I find happens with other brands and then makes it harder for my boys to pick up with their forks but this was not the case and it remained in shape the whole time and also the fish did not go flaky and go all over the plate.
These fish portions are made by Young’s and they clam to be from their ‘Chip Shop’ selection, I don’t personally have fish from a chip shop as it is so over priced but the small bits which I have tasted from there does actually taste similar to these. I would say these are less greasy than the chip shop variety and much easer to eat.
There are 6 portions in the box but they are very small and people with big appetites may need to have 2 or maybe 3 per meal which makes these not very good value for money and I would recommend that you stick to the bigger variety. They are a good size for younger children though.

The fish is frozen and is best cooked from frozen but if you do defrost yours then the cooking times need to be reduced.
~~PRICE AND AVAILABILITY~~
I bought my fish from Iceland and only pad £2 for the box which I thought was pretty reasonable. It is available in other supermarkets but I expect the price will be slightly higher. It can be found in the freezer section.
I can only give these fish portions 4/5 stars as they did taste great and we all enjoyed them. I would have given them the full 5 stars if they would have been slightly bigger so hubby and my eldest needed 2 each. I think these would be great for cooking and eating with salad and dips when used in pita bread or wraps. For the price they are definitely worth trying.
