Toy Story 3 came out this year and has received some stellar reviews some even calling it the best movie of the year. Also being claimed as the best out of the trilogy and the best pixar movie ever. Now Pixar are the leaders in animated story telling there is nobody out there at the moment that can do it better then they can. Last year Up secured a nod becoming the second animated film to get a best picture nomination (first being 1991’s Beauty And The Beast) and its safe to say Toy Story 3 will be the third animated film to recieve that honour. But can it be the first to win? The answer is quite simply no because of two factors, one being it has its own category to win and second being that voters can’t take animated movies seriously.
Now I am in favour of the expansion of ten nominees, last year was the trial run and with the exception of The Blind Side I think they picked some pretty good movies. It was great to see District 9 and Up in there. Hopefully if they continue the ten we will get to see foreign movies and documentaries nominated too. It’s great to see a variety then the same old types of films getting in.
Over the years there have been some excellent animated films Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Dumbo, The Jungle Book, Aladdin, The Lion King, Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Monsters INC., Shrek, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, WALL-E and etc. The list goes on of many that weren’t taken seriously enough. It would be great to hear them call out Toy Story 3 and watch as Pixar collect their Oscar but most likely it will be the names of The Social Network or The King’s Speech. I would be glad to see David Fincher collect his Oscar for direction but why can’t a director of an animated film be nominated? Doesn’t he work as hard as a live action director does?
Maybe in the future we will see an animated best picture winner but right now I can’t see that happening. If I had to put my money on the first it would have to be pixar, they just never seem to dissapoint and wow can they can make grab for the box of tissues. Kept at it pixar you are making wonderful movies.
