The Mothers-in-Law: The Wig Story has some romance to it, which I adore. I’ve said before that one of the reasons I enjoy this show is that there that magic of romance behind all the comedy, just as there was on I Love Lucy. Lucy was crazy, but she and Ricky were in love. That same feeling comes across with the Hubbards and the Buells of this series as well.
In fact, it’s the Buells (played by Kaye Ballard and Roger C. Carmel) who actually have the most charisma. It makes me smile and shows that they aren’t just together because they’ve been married for a quarter century.
This show capitalizes on that, the catalyst being a long, blonde wig that Kaye borrows from Eve. It sets Roger off in a good way. Even Kaye didn’t go her usual nuts when her son showed up.
As could be expected, though, there is plenty of crazy in this half hour as the romance turns to jealousy. Eve then hatches a scheme that goes south for her and Herb. It’s a riot.
This is just a good, clean fun show with the type of comedy that I value and appreciate. It entertained, and that’s what counts.
