The Mothers-in-Law: Who’s Afraid of Elizabeth Taylor? is one of those zany shows where couples fight over no reason at all. In this case, it begins with the Buells arguing over Roger admitting to Kaye that he’d go out with Elizabeth Taylor.
Roger ends up over at the Hubbards’ home. This leads to Herb laughing at Kaye kicking Roger out over something so ridiculous. Eve agrees until Herb says that he, too, would go out with the sexy actress. Ultimately, this leads to the husbands staying together while the wives huffily stick together as well.
There’s a lot of craziness in this, and young folks of today would have to understand just how ‘hot’ Elizabeth Taylor was considered back in the 60’s. For the record, Taylor isn’t in the episode, nor is even her picture shown. Her name, however, is spoken repeatedly throughout the program.
For me, the funniest moment was actually at the end when the newlyweds, Susie and Jerry, fight over the same thing, only being younger, it’s Ann-Margret getting Susie so upset.
It’s good comedy, even if it’s predictable. The actors do a fine job with the dialog given them. Eve Arden, Kaye Ballard, Herbert Rudley, and Roger Carmel all deserve kudos.
