  1. Exteroceptive – arises from stimuli outside the body which affect receptors in the skin and special receptors in the ear and eye.

  2. Proprioceptive – arises the stimuli at muscles, tendons and joints that affect receptors in these structures and in the semicircular canals of the ear.

  3. Interceptive – arises from stimuli, such as pressure and chemicals within the body, which affect receptors in the internal organs and special receptors in the tongue and nose.
