Green or environmental are commonly spelled words. Policies and marketing are are deluged with remarks of sustainability and renewable resources. Looking around the events, what events have politicians, scientists and the developed countries deemed important to the modern green lifestyle?
Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs
A compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) is a variety of energy-efficient lamp designed (at lots of cases) to replace the old and energy-consuming incandescent lamps. Using less power and having a longer life span while still providing the same light, these bulbs are an alternative bulb source for a lot of us. Although there are many positive points to these bulbs, it is worth remembering that they contain mercury like any other fluorescent light bulb, so disposal is complex.
The price of these bulbs is greater than the normal bulb, though they last longer which makes them another reason why CFLs are kinder to the environment and our pocket.
Extreme Weather is a name for weather phenomena that are at the excesses of historical occurrence. Since 2000 many extreme weather occurrences have taken place, these natural occurrences starting with a surprising heat wave in Europe in 2003, through to earthquakes across Haiti in 2008. Even though the climatologists aren’t united on whether this is a proof of the humanity having a detrimental impact on the global climate, it is almost sure that this was only the beginning and a these natural disasters were a sign of more similar events on the way.
Sunlight, wind, geothermal heat, rain and wood all produce energy that is renewable, these natural resources of energy are named renewable energy resources.
To promote sustainable development in the world, these energy resources need to be used, which has been taking place for the last decade and hopefully will continue to evolve. We can no longer rely on the resources we have at the moment to generate electricity and need to look in more directions to create it Enlarging the renewable energy sector will be crucial for allowing meaningful cuts of the emissions while helping us find long-term solutions for electricity generation.
Mexican Gulf Oil Tragedy
It is doubtful many of you will not know about a fairly recent disaster, one that is still being felt worldwide – the Mexican Gulf oil spill. A big explosion and subsequent fire hit the Deepwater Horizon mobile offshore drilling unit on the 20th April 2010, the unit is approximately 40 miles off the Louisiana coast. Indications that the oil spill was relatively minor were the first reports seen, but later those reports were changed to show that the spill was of immense proportions. By the end of May, the predicted amount of the leaked oil was changed from 5,000 barrels a day to 12,000 -19,000 barrels a day and was expected to be more.
We may not hear about tragedies surrounding oil very often, but they are becoming more commonplace, which is not good news. Oil spills jeopardizes the environment with horrendous consequences; questions are now being asked, yet again, whether mankind is capable of drilling safely and without hurting the environment.
