Smallville: Icarus

Last night I watched the Icarus episode of Smallville.  The series is in its final year so it is wrapping everything up for fans, which I think is fantastic.  I wasn’t at all surprised as a result to see that this was episode in which Clark Kent slips that ring onto Lois Lane’s hand.  It was somewhat humorous and very sweet both.

What I knew would be bittersweet and difficult to watch was the guest appearance of Michael Shanks who so adeptly played Carter Hall aka: Hawkman.  I adore Shanks; he’s my favorite living actor, and he was made for this Hawkman role.  However, all good things come to an end, and it was pretty clear from his earlier appearance this year that he was doomed.

Here’s the thing.  I just would love to know if Shanks or anyone on that set who may be a fan of his Stargate SG-1 series laughed at one of the lines.  I did.  There he was, spread out on the ground, having heroically saved Lois’ life, and he says this line, and I just laughed.

“I’m a pro at dying.”  That’s the line.  Yes, it fit the Hawkman character, but after his 10 seasons of the ‘he’s dead, he’s not dead, he’s dead again, no he’s not really dead’ Daniel Jackson on SG-1, I just couldn’t help myself.

The show was very solid.  Hawkman got more respect and honors than poor Daniel ever did.  Now, if Hawkman would just resurrect with Shanks in the part and just another persona, that would work.
