Tesco Value Vanilla Mini Roll Product Review

I am always on the look out for small snacks to put into school lunchboxes and I was pleased when I managed to spot these at Tesco, more so as they were very cheap. They looked tasty so I did not hesitate in giving them a try.

The cakes come in a clear plastic tray which has a clear cover over them. On the top there is the Value logo on the top left hand corner and across the middle is a red flash which has the product name on. The back of the packet contains all of the product information and ingredients.

The individual cakes look quite attractive, they are a light yellow colour and a good size. They each measure approximately 6cm by 3cm long and 1.5 cm thick. When you look at the side profile of them you can see a small amount of the filling which is red jam and cream.

We were all looking forward to tasting the cakes but unfortunately they did not taste as good as they looked. The sponge was quite dry and I did at times find it hard to swallow it. I could not really taste the vanilla flavour in the sponge and to me it was very much like the basic sponge you get on Victoria sponge caked. The filling was pleasant enough to eat and made a nice contrast to the dry sponge but there was no where near enough of it. When I bit into the cake the remainder went as flat as anything and the sponge did not spring back up. There was a distinct lack of jam in the middle of the roll and all I could taste was the sponge and cream. My boys did enjoy their rolls and were quite happy to ask for another which was surprising to me as I was not overly impressed with them.

One good point about the cakes is that they do not make crumbs, this may be due to the fact they can be eaten in two bits, or whole in my hubby’s case. I found that when my boys had sat to he table to eat them there were no crumbs on the plates or table cloth so this was a bonus.

The cakes do not come individually wrapped which is a negative as this would have made them easier to pop into lunch boxes, but I just pop them into a small sandwich bag and they seen to stay fresh in them until lunch time. The remainder of the packet of mini rolls must be stored in an air tight container after the packet is opened as they do dry out very quickly and then they are only fit for the bin.

The packet contains 6 min rolls each weighing 22g.

The nutritional values for each individual mini roll are:-

Energy – 90 Kcal

Protein – 1.1g

Carbohydrate – 12.6g

Of which sugars – 6.6g

Fat – 3.8g

Of which saturates – 1.1g

Mono-unsaturated – 1.5g

Polyunsaturated – 1.2g

Fibre – 0.3g

Sodium – trace

Salt equivalent – trace

These are not overly bad values but for the fat and calories I would have liked more flavour.

The ingredient are:-

Vanilla Flavour filling (28%), Wheat flour, Raspberry flavour filling (14%), Sugar, Pasteurised whole egg, Humectant(vegetable Glycerine), glucose sugar, Soya Flour, Pasteurised egg white, whey powder, raising agents (Disodium Diphosphate, Potassium Carbonate), Vegetable Oil, Preservatives (Potassium Sorbate), Emulsifiers (Mono- and Di-glycerides of Fatty acids, Polyglycerol Esters of Fatty acids), Acidity regulator (Citric Acid), Natural flavouring, Antioxidant (Calcium Lactate).

There are some allergy warnings on the packets and these include the fact that the mini rolls contain milk, wheat, gluten, egg and Soya. The recipe is nut free but Tesco cannot guarantee the ingredients or place of making is.

The shelf life of the mini rolls is good and the packet I bought last week has over a month on them, this is not the case once they have been opened as they need to be eaten within a few days as they do go hard and dry.

These are a Tesco Value product so can only be bought in Tesco stores. They have the great price of just 30p per pack so I think they are good value. Other supermarkets do their own versions of these mini rolls but I cannot comment on how good or bad they are.

If it was up to me I would not recommend these as I found them to be quite tasteless but as my boys loved them, and that s who they were bought for I will recommend them. I can only give them 3 stars as they were a let down but I think for the price tag they are well worth giving a try.
