Medical Marijuana – What Every User Should Know

How Much Do Americans Spend on Prescription Drugs Each Year?

Although sales have slowed in recent years, the total amount spent on prescription drugs in the US in 2007 was 286billion dollars. It appears that many adults are taking prescription drugs these days, in spite of the many side effects the TV ads don’t tell you about. The side effects of some “helpful” medications are potentially more dangerous than the disease itself. Americans routinely self-medicate with alcohol and street drugs, risking high fines, jail time, and serious health issues.

A large number of adults in the 30-75 age range self-medicate with medical marijuana, and have been doing so for years. These people chose marijuana over alcohol and street drugs as their preferred medication for chronic pain and other ills. If you are one of these, you need to understand that getting a license for the use of medical marijuana is critical!

If you have been using medical marijuana and are not licensed, here’s what you are risking:

1. Should you be pulled over for a dead taillight, or get in a minor accident, and you have unlicensed marijuana in your car, you may well find yourself facing a hefty fine or even jail time. You can visit NORML’s website at http://norml.org/index.cfm?wtm_view=&Group_ID=4539to check the marijuana laws in your state, but in Kentucky, for example, if you are convicted of possession of less than eight ounces (a misdemeanor), first offense, you are subject to a year in jail and a fine of $500; for a subsequent offense, 1-5 years, and a fine of $1,000-10,000.

2. If you are buying your medical marijuana from your teenagers’ friends instead of from a registered outlet, you are putting yourself and your family at risk. What would happen to them if you had to go to jail for a year? Also, with street drugs, you never know what you’re getting, do you.

3. If you are caught, you are looking at possible legal fees over $10,000 and fines, or more, not to mention the humiliation you and your family are sure to suffer as a result. What will your children think? What kind of a lesson will they take from your behavior?

Why would anyone want to take these risks if for around $90 a year they can wipe them completely away?

With a license, you will not have to be looking over your shoulder every time you carry your medical marijuana in the car. You can even consume it at work, at a wedding, or in any public place by using edibles: banana bread, cookies, candies, chocolates, and even drinks. You can arrange for all this in a safe environment with experts who can help you choose the right medicine for your needs.

If discretion is important to you, the edibles can be delivered to your home or even your workplace, with no one the wiser.

To get your license, first visit your doctor, and tell him or her that you have been self-medicating with marijuana for years. Ask the doctor to sign your recommendation form. There is no risk to either of you with this process. Send in the recommendation form with $90 for your license. It will then be legal for you to have two ounces of marijuana in your possession for medical use. If you are ever stopped and asked, just show your license, and be on your way.
