If they are stored say in a drawer with other utensils then the knifes will knock together with other items and damage the cutting edge amongst other items. Another option for the storage of your knives might be the use of a magnetic knife holder, as this will keep your knifes from getting damaged.
Over time and with use your knives will also wear away the sharp egde. This happens by wear and tear as well as cutting against hard surfaces. You will also need to consider re-sharpening of your knife set. If you use a suitable chopping board you will prolong the life of your knives cutting edge.
