Alien Swarm Gets Smarter, More Brutal

Fans of the recently released and apparently awesome Alien Swarm have voiced their opinions to Valve and the prominent game developer/publisher has heard their suggestions loud and clear. As a result, Valve has announced some free enhancements to the already free game that will add more variety and greater difficulty to the experience.

Basically, Valve has added “Onslaught” mode, which introduces an AI Director that dynamically generates swarms of aliens based on several factors, such as the squad’s stress level. According to Valve, Onslaught works with any difficulty setting and ensures no mission plays the same way twice.

Nice.

Now, for the sadistic amongst you, the update delivers a new “Brutal” difficulty level for those of you who decided that the “Insane” difficulty level wasn’t insane enough. How brutal is Brutal? Well, according to the post, nobody on the Alien Swarm team has managed to complete a mission on it.

Brutal.

Also, there’s now a “Hardcore Friendly Fire” toggle which. when enabled, causes friendly fire to deal full damage immediately – flamethrowers set teammates on fire much faster and turrets will hurt you if get caught in their crossfire. The feature is designed to test your team’s ability to work as a elite squad, coordinate movement and make firing lines an even more integral part of the game.

Lastly, the update adds 3 new IAF Promotion Ranks: Platinum Star, Osmium Star, and the coveted Iridium Medallion to reward the most dedicated players in the world.
