Manny Pacquiao: The Boxer Who Unites A Country.

You may not believe it, but Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, did unite a country. The Philippines composes of almost 7 thousand islands, and believe me, Filipinos have their own differences, we have a huge dispute in the government and politics, the administrations and the oppositions always have something to say against each others; we argue about how to control the growing population of the country, the government wanted to control it with science, while the church wanted to do it with faith; we have rebels in the forest (the New People’s Army and the Muslim rebels MILF) that are fighting against the Philippine government; we are separated not only by seas but also with faith, beliefs, culture, and principles.

But every time Manny Pacquiao is in the ring, the whole Philippines unite for a common cheer. I’d never seen Edsa avenue (the busiest road in the Philippines), in daylight, as if it is midnight because of the few cars passing. There are no traffics, almost all taxi, jeepney, tricycle and bus drivers are not in the road but in front of a TV watching Pacman’s figth. The Philippines National Police rate this as almost zero crime. There are no fights between the rebels; all the military camps are tune-in to watch the fight. The opposition and the administration politicians are sitting beside each other and cheering in unity for Pacman. The church and the government together say their prayers for Pacman’s safety and  victory. The whole time Pacquiao was inside the ring, as if the world of the Filipinos stopped. In unity they are cheer for their heroes “Pacman”.

Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, will soon lost his strength as every athlete did, but what he achieved is already a mark that cannot be erased. He did not only win in the ring but he also makes the Filipino win their pride.

There was this time that people shouted the name “Ali”; when Sugar Ray Leonnard, was the most famous boxer of the world; when Oscar Dela Hoya never hit the ring floor, but this time a boxer surprised the world when they saw a single fighter unites a country. I am proud to say that I lived in the time of Manny Pacquiao.
