When Frank Kim started carving totem poles at the Niagara Glen Picnic Area Nature Reserve, locals and tourists alike were drawn to the eclectic and growing community of whimsical totem pole characters. Now, with over 500 totem poles under his belt, the totem pole park makes for an intriguing visit. The totem pole creations not only showcase Kim’s extraordinayr woodcarving talent but they also hint at a keen sense of whimsy and humour.
Mr. Kim has set out to depict all aspects of Canadiana through his totem pole village and as you walk through the park, you can’t help but get the sense that Canada is supposed to be fun. This is one stop that holds alot of appeal for families with children. Admission is reasonably set at $5.00 for adults and $4.00 for children and seniors. A small price to pay for an interlude that reads like a story and excites the keen imaginations of children.
Located amidst picnic grounds and at the entrance to the Niagara Glen nature trails, this stop is a far cry from the hustle and bustle of the busy tourist district. The Niagara Glen Gift Shop and snack bar are also on site as well as plenty of free parking for nature lovers and totem pole enthusiasts.
The Totem Pole Park is about five miles down the parkway from the Falls, located at 3050 Niagara Parkway. Make sure your camera is charged and loaded, as the little ones will surely want to capture the memories of their favourite colourful totem pole pals.
