From this defination, it can thus be concluded that everyone has a philosophy. Philosophies are powerful because they determine how we live our lives. In reality then, everybody is a product of his or her philosophy. You cannot rise any higher than the philosophy you have established in your life. Hence it is important to evaluate the things that you have chosen to believe.
When an idea becomes an established thought, it becomes an ideology. The American Heritage Dictionary defines an ideology as “The body of ideas reflecting the social needs and aspirations of an individual, group, class or culture” and as “a set of doctrines or beliefs that form the basis of a political, economic, or other system”.
This shows that ideologies are formed from ideas. Thus your foundational thinking about life is your ideology because everything begins with an idea. God is interested in your ideology because if your idea is wrong then your ideology is also wrong.
An ideology becomes a theory when it becomes a belief system. A theory is defined as including “A belief or principle that guides action or assists comprehension or judgment, — an assumption based on limited information or knowledge; a conjecture”. If your ideology is wrong, then your theory is wrong. If your theory is wrong, then everything you believe in is in question.
When you believe on a theory you make it your conviction, and thus your philosophy. The stem “philo” means love. The suffix “logy” mean knowledge. Hence philosophy means love of knowledge. So when you learn something and you begin to love, believe, live by it and act according to it, it becomes your philosophy, even if it is wrong.
Many people refuse to change because they are used to what they believe and feel safe with what they believe. They stubbornly hold on firm to their erroneous belief even if it kills them. Some of us will tell God, “This is the way that we have done it for years” as a excuse for not tranforming our thinking. For change to take place one’s ideas must also change. This is why Jesus said old wine skins cannot handle new wine.
Paul asks the believer in Christ to “put off concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be removed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness”, Ephesians 4:22-24. This is only possible if we deal with the strongholds that hold us captive based on our ideology.
Many of us could be more successful than we are now in our ministries, proffessions, relationships, among others if only we would change our beliefs and ideas that hold us captive. We accuse God wrongly of not answering our prayers when the answer lies in our thinking or perception. James says that ” —you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not recieve, because you ask a miss, that you may spend it to your pleasures” James 4:2-3.
The philosophy that is of right standing with God is “first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy” James 3: 17. God does not hold any one back. Indeed the Bible says that God wants us to prosper and advance in life. However you have free will and you are as good as your thinking. If you want to change, do not change your clothes; change your ideas.
