Aciphex is a medication which is used to control your GERD, which is gastroesophageal reflux disease. Sometimes doctors also use this drug to help duodenal ulcers and erosive esophagus. One of the main purposes of this drug then, is to decrease the production of acids in the stomach so that they don’t produce more ulcers or continue eroding the esophagus.
Aciphex has also been used in treating H.pylori, a type of bacteria found in the stomach. H. Pylori has been known to cause gastric ulcers. Your doctor may give you Aciphex along with a course of antibiotic treatments to clear this certain type of infection. In the case of H. pylori infection, this drug may only be needed for 7 days.
If you are known to have allergies to any of the ingredients in Aciphex, you should not take the drug. These would include such drugs as Prevacid, Nexium, Prilosec, or Prevacid. Inform your doctor about any types of these drugs which you are allergic to. An allergic response to Aciphex can cause rashes on the skin, nausea with diarrhea, and headaches.
Another thing your doctor needs to have noted on your record before prescribing Aciphex is whether or not you have a history of liver disease. This drug should not be given in that case scenario.
The effects of Aciphex on pregnanc have not as yet been determined, but if you plan on a pregnancy, it is still best to inform your doctor, or when breastfeeding.
It is always important to take your dosages of Aciphex with a full 8 ounce glass of water. You can take it with or without food either way. Overall, doctors prescribe this drug for not longer than 8 weeks. The usual dosage of this drug is about twice daily for the length of time you take it.
Like with most drugs, you should not double up your dosage of Aciphex if you have forgotten to take it. Instead, just take the next planned dosage.Overall, Aciphex is a very well tolerated drug by most people. General side effects of this drug can be things such as nervousness, depression, lack of sexual drive, amnesia, confusion, and strange dreams. Some information reported very dry skin and psoriasis along with the skin becoming very discolored. Urinary incontinence has also been another noted side effect.
