Are You Using Your Intellect For Good?

As the election cycle intensifies the rhetoric gets thicker and thicker. One side of the political spectrum accuses the other side of this or that. Mud flies and the one thing we all need…the truth…is never addressed. I just don’t understand how this is the good use of intellect much less energy. Yet because we the people don’t use our intellect properly it works.

Life is complicated, even more so lately. The economy sucks. Unemployment is high, the housing market is tanking yet again. Everyday the news gets worse and worse. At least according to the media. So where does the use of our intellect play into all of this.

Ever play the game Gossip? It’s a great party game and proves how our society works. Place your guests in a circle or a line. The first person whispers a phrase or short description in the ear of the person next to them and that person does the same to his neighbor and so on and so on. By the time the information gets to the last person its totally unrecognizable. Yet we, the people, tend to believe anything that is in print, on TV, or now, on the Web. Why is that?

Just because it’s in the media doesn’t make it true. Look up some of the international newspapers and read stories about the United States. Then compare them with what our media is saying. Very different aren’t they? We all have our own perspective on things and that’s were intellect comes in.

We use our intellect to sort out the things around us. We use it to filter the information that we take in. Conversely we also use it for what we sent out in the way of our thoughts, our speech, our actions and the things we write. I’m using mine right now to compose this article. Without the use of our intellect we become nothing more than lizards reacting to our environment. Our intellect sets apart from animals. Gives us an edge in our environment and can be used for good or bad.

How can you know if you are using your intellect for good? It’s very simple. Follow the Golden Rule. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” I know, it sounds very churchy preachy but it works. By being honest with yourself and treating others like you would be treated your whole behavior will change. Tempted to take advantage of someone in a business deal? Would you want that done to you? Want to slander someone, bend the rules, drink a little too much and risk a horrific accident? Using our intellect to consciously think and weigh our choices before we act raises us up out of the mire of being reactionary and puts us on a higher level. Think of how much better things would be if our politicians lived by the Golden Rule.

When we use our intellect for good we start looking out for others. Just think what this world would be like if instead of trying to get the best of each other we started looking out for each other in every aspect. I would look after your interest and you after mine allowing both of our interests to be served. No more fighting, no more wars, no more conflict. Just cooperation. Think of the billions of dollars that could be spent on helping mankind as a whole if we just eliminated war.

It’s up to you. We have the power in our hands to use our intellect for good. We can use it to benefit both our neighbors and ourselves OR we can use it for bad, go to the dark side, and reap our just rewards. The thing is we may do well for a while but eventually our actions will catch up with us. Call it Karma or whatever it works. Now my question for you is will you use your intellect for good?
