Definition of a Missing Person

The definition of a missing person is someone, an adult or minor who has disappeared and no longer has contact or communication with family, friends, job, school or acquaintances.

How to file the Police report  

First, there is no waiting period to file a missing person report.  You should file the Police report in the jurisdiction where the missing person lives. 

If a child is missing then this certainly qualifies calling 9-1-1 immediately to get the Police at the scene as quickly as possible to begin searching for the child.  A massive Police effort will take place and a command post will be set up organize the search.  A coordinated effort of search and rescue, fire department and volunteers will participate 24 hours a day until the child is found.

If an adult is missing then contact the local Police department where the missing adult lives to find out what reporting resources are available.  Most Police agencies will not take a missing person’s report over the phone.

What you need to file the Police report

You will need to provide as much information about the missing person as possible.  Do they take medication?  What were they wearing when last seen?  How was there emotional sense?  What could there possible destination be?  Were they at work at all during their absence?  Has any friends been contacted or has anyone seen the missing person?

 A recent picture of the person is very helpful so the Police can make up flyers to be distributed. 

Why file a Missing Person report

Filing a missing person’s report protects the person missing who may be in serious trouble, lost or injured.  Filing the report helps the Police who may come across someone and in the process of trying to identify them will discover that a missing report has been filed and the family can be notified.


Filing a Missing Person report with the Police is a detailed process.  The Police usually input the missing person’s information into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) so all other Police agencies nationally will have access to the pertinent information of the missing person and help locate them.

Make sure, once you file a Police report that you always get your Police report case number and either a receipt that you filed a report or an actual copy of the report for your records.
