Mechanical Turk, also known as Mturk, is a service provided by Amazon that brings people who need work done and those willing to work together.
Mturk was created in late 2005 and has since taken off in popularity. At any given time there are anywhere from 75,000 tasks (better known as hits) to 200,000 or more, ranging in pay from $.01 to $20.00.
The lower the pay, the easier and quicker the hit can be completed. So, even though a penny hit might not seem like much pay, many requesters (those who place hits) place hundreds and even thousands of these hits for workers (also known as Turkers) up for completion.
A good turker can make $7+ an hour. But more important than that, you have the complete freedom to work at home during the hours you choose. There is no boss looking over your shoulder, no one to tell you that you can’t take a break (maybe your baby just got into something) and you can work as much or as little as you desire.
The only limiting factor other than your willingness to do what many would call menial tasks, is requesters post hits all throughout the day and night so you have to keep an eye out for your favorites and be ready to pounce on them.
Think of Mturk as a reverse clearance sale, where they pay you to sift through the hits. But you’re not the only one shopping, there are thousands of others vying for your hit. If you don’t get it, don’t lose hope, refresh the page and find another.
In the words of Tom Petty, “There’s something good waitin’ down this road, I’m pickin’ up whatever’s mine.”
So, head on over to www.mturk.com and pick up what’s yours today.
