Pregnancy involves a lot of changes in the woman’s body and it can trigger a lot of discomforts especially during the first and the third trimesters. If you are pregnant, you will probably feel very tired and sluggish during the first few months. To stay healthy throughout your pregnancy, you need to have proper prenatal care. Eating right and exercising will also help you cope with the many changes in your body.
The First Trimester
Different women experience different types of symptoms during their first trimester (week 1- week 12). For some women, the hormonal changes trigger several symptoms including nausea, frequent urination, food cravings, painful breast swelling, fatigue and general irritability. To stay healthy during this trying period, pregnant women need to get enough rest, plenty of fluids and good food. For women who are always on the go, a change in lifestyle may be in order. Alcoholic beverages and smoking are to be avoided as these may have some severe negative impact on the fetus.
The Second Trimester
While the first trimester can bring a lot of misery, the second trimester (week 13- week 28) of pregnancy can be quite enjoyable for most women. Most women experience some energy surge during this period but towards the later part of the second trimester, some women may feel the strain of pregnancy and may experience some leg cramps, water retention and occasional heartburn especially after a big meal. To stay comfortable during this period, pregnant women should eat plenty of fiber rich food, drink plenty of water and juices, avoid prolonged standing and avoid wearing ill fitting clothes and shoes.
The Third Trimester
The last three months of pregnancy can be the most trying times for almost all pregnant women. By this time, the baby is big enough to stretch the uterus to capacity and breathing may become a bit difficult for the pregnant woman. The aches and pains around the ankles, joints and back can amplify during this period. Some women gain a lot of weight during this period that they become insecure about the way they look. To stay healthy and comfortable during this period, a pregnant woman should get enough rest, exercise and proper nutrition.
