Different Ways to Grow Sprouts

Sprouts are one of the healthiest foods on the planet as they are high in chlorophyll, fiber, amino acids and other nutrients which are essential for your body. They are germinated seeds that have just begun to grow, and are eaten within a few days of when the shoots begin to grow.

You can purchase many types of sprouts in most grocery stores, but you can also grow your own as they are fresher than the ones you can buy. Sprouts are usually ready within 3 to 5 days. Here are some ways that you can grow your own sprouts.


One of the easiest ways that you can grow your own sprouts is in a sprouter which is designed for sprouting. There are many different kinds of sprouters; if you want to sprout small seeds such as alfalfa or broccoli then you will only need a small sprouter, but if you want to sprout larger seeds such as beans or sunflower seeds then you will need a larger one.

Glass Jar

If you do not have a sprouter, then you can sprout your seeds in a wide-mouthed glass jar. Simply put a small amount of seeds in the jar and place a cheesecloth over the mouth of the jar using a rubber band to hold the cloth in place. Then rinse your seeds and tilt the jar so the seeds can drain.


You can also use dirt to grow your sprouts. Simply take a tray and add a small layer of dirt, sprinkle your seeds, and add another thin layer of dirt. Keep it moist and within a few days your seeds will begin to sprout. Then when you are ready to eat them just clip them with a pair of scissors.

Whichever method you choose, you should always make sure that your sprouts are kept moist. The seed packages will tell you how often you should rinse them.

About the Seeds

When sprouting seeds for the purpose of eating the sprouts, then you should always buy organic seeds, as you do not want to ingest chemicals. Most health food stores have seeds that are obtained for the purpose of sprouting. You can also buy these seeds online if you cannot find them in your health food stores.

How to Eat Sprouts

Sprouts are excellent for adding to your sandwiches, wraps and salads. You can also add them to your smoothies and juices. Or if you like, you can eat them as they are. Before eating your sprouts make sure to rinse them with clean water.
