Retain Your Memory as You Age

A good memory is essential as it helps you to retrieve information that you have stored in your brain. It is essential for socializing and doing everyday tasks such as getting groceries, cooking dinner and organizing your home.

Brain cells are what makes it possible for you to be able to remember things. As you age your body slows down in the production of new brain cells, and therefore your memory begins to slow down as well. But the good thing is that you do not have to lose your memory totally, as your brain will not stop producing new cells as long as you live, provided that you do your part to create these new cells. Here are some things that you can do to retain your memory as you age:

Eat Healthy

One of the best things that you can do for your brain is to eat a healthy diet. Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables will not only help your brain to produce new cells but they will also wash away the harmful toxins which cause your brain cells to deteriorate.

Some of the best foods to add into your diet are foods that are high in antioxidants such as blueberries, cranberries, strawberries, oranges, bananas, apples, garlic, kale, spinach, brussels sprouts, and lots of nuts and seeds.

Drink Plenty of Water

Water is also essential for helping your body to eliminate toxins that settle around the brain. And it also helps to hydrate your body from the inside out, so that not only your brain can remain young, but your skin will remain young as well.

Exercise

Both physical and mental exercises are necessary if you want to retain your memory as you age. Studies show that those who engage in regular mental exercises to stimulate their mind are able to remember more than those who do not exercise their mind.

Physical exercise will not only help to keep your muscles in shape, but it also helps to increase the blood flow so that your brain can receive more oxygen. Oxygen is needed for your brain to create new brain cells.

Lose Excess Weight

If you are overweight, then you should lose your excess weight. Excess fat cells in your body restrict the blood flow to your brain, and this hinders the production of new brain cells. Leaf vegetables and nuts are great foods to add into your diet to help you to lose excess weight.

You will find that your short term memory will slow down as you age, which means that it will take you longer to store and retrieve information. But it doesn’t mean that you will not be able to remember things, as it will just take longer to process.
