Install anti-virus software. Be sure to install the updates as they become available. You can find reputable companies that provide anti-virus software for your computer, such as Norton, Mcafee and webroot.
Install or turn on your computer’s personal firewall this will block anything unwanted from entering your computer with out your knowledge or permission.
Search your computer for “firewall,” and when the results come up, click on the Windows firewall option. You should see where the screen says Windows firewall is on, active or enabled. If it does not say one of these options, there should be a button to click to enable it.
Avoid using the same password for multiple accounts, especially your banking accounts. Never email your passwords to yourself, and try to avoid writing down your passwords for others to find. If you have to write them down, use a code or helpful hint that only you would be able to decipher.
Download an anti-spy ware software. Spy ware is software that is installed on your computer to spy on you and what you do on the Internet. Sometimes it is even downloaded without your knowledge. It takes information that you do and sends it back to whoever put it on your computer. When purchasing anti-virus software, check for the package that offers spy-ware protection as well.
