In a casual talk with Filipino Celebrity Headlines Examiner Granville Ampong at Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas, Nevada, right after his rematch with Juan Diaz last July 31, the Dinamita Juan Manuel Marquez revealed that boxing superstar Manny Pacman Pacquiao is his top priority. He added, however, that he would fight the Pacman only at 141, 142 or 143.
Pacman was 145 ¾ when he very successfully defended his Welterweight title against Joshua Clottey last March 13 in Texas. Marquez was only 133 ½ when he defeated Juan Diaz last Saturday.
In their first encounter in 2004, Marquez got a draw. They both weighed 125 lbs. In their rematch in 2008, he lost his WBC Super Featherweight title to the Pacman in a split decision. The Dinamita weighed 130 lbs, 1 lb heavier than the Pacman. He climbed up to 142 for his fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr last year. He lost.
Now Marquez is asking for a trilogy with the seven-division world champion – but at 141, 142 or 143? The Pacman is moving up to the catchweight of 150 lbs for his fight against Antonio Margarito this coming November 13. Marquez wants him at 143.
The Pacman has all the reasons to refuse, and Marquez cannot have a better priority than Manny Pacquiao. Manny Pacquiao would just be too overwhelming for Juan Manuel Marquez. Nevertheless, let’s give everyone the freedom to dream.
