If you are not already established with a physician, it’s time to do so. Don’t wait for an emergency situation. Ask for referrals from family, acquaintances or physician referral services locally, or online.
Before making an appointment: Call the doctor’s office and ask if they are in contract with your insurance provider.
Prepare the following to take to your appointment: Family health history. Any personal health concerns or questions that you may have. List all medications you are on, including dosage and frequency (or bring the medication vials to your appointment. List any herbal supplements and/or vitamins you are taking. List any medications that will soon be needing refills. Make sure you have your insurance card and driver’s licence handy.

On day of appointment: Bathe and put on clean clothes. Make sure you have all the information that you collected.
You may not be feeling well on the day of your appointment, but don’t take it out on your doctor or his staff. They are there to help you.
If the doctor orders a test or procedure to be done in or outside their office, be sure to find out if someone will be pre-certifying with your insurance carrier in advance. If not, you will need to do this yourself to avoid any expensive billing surprises after the fact.
