Proportion of Herb to Water:

Dried Herb                      

½ oz herb to 1 cup of water

Fresh Herb

1oz herb to 1 cup water

Infusion- used with delicate plant parts: flowers, soft leaves

  1. Bring water to boil and turn heat off
  2. Put herbs in container
  3. Pour boiled water over herbs in container
  4. Put tight lid on container
  5. Let sit (steep) for 15 minutes
  6. Strain and drink 

Decoction-used with sturdy plant parts that need breaking down-coarse leaves stems, roots and barks

  1. Place herbs directly in water and stir well
  2. Bring water to boil, then turn heat down and simmer
  3. Simmer herbs for 20-30 minutes. Usually water decreases by half through evaporation
  4. Strain and drink

Dosage- Adults 2-4 cups day

Storage- Teas can be in large batches of 1 quart to 1 gallon and stored 2 days in tightly sealed container in refrigerator

*but it is better to make as needed
