How to Resist Cravings

Step One
Learn the difference between a craving and hunger. Is your stomach growling? If yes, then you are probably just hungry and you should choose a healthy alternative. But if your mind is fixated on one food item, then you are probably craving it.

Step Two
When you have a craving for an unhealthy food, remember the old saying “30 seconds on your lips, forever on your hips”. Say it out loud.

Step Three
Look at a picture of yourself the way you want to be. If you give in to this craving, you move away from this image. Tell yourself the craving is less important than who you want to be.

Step Four
Don’t give in to the craving immediately. Distract yourself for 10 minutes – read a news article or a book, call a friend or family, go for a walk or play an engrossing game.

Step Five
Clean your house of tempting food. You can take it to work and share with colleagues, give it to a friend or neighbor, or donate to a local shelter. If you keep only healthy food at home, even if you have a craving, you will not be able to get your hands on unhealthy food.

Step Six
If you are still craving, eat a healthy snack or drink tea or water.
