Autism is a severe developmental disorder which is manifested at birth and can be seen in first three years of a child.  Majority of autistic children appear absolutely normal, but often have puzzled and disturbed look and behave in an odd fashion. Less severe cases of autism are diagnosed as Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD).  It is also called as Asperger’s Syndrome. In these cases, children generally have normal speech though they have many “autistic” behavioral problems.

It was believed that autism cannot be treated, but the good news is that there are numerous treatment methods that can be tried. Some of the options help in totally curing the child and some have limited to no response. But a beginning can be made to improve the quality of life of autistic child.

The most common treatment used is parent ratings of biomedical interventions. This method has been effectively used by more than 25,000 parents and it has shown some effectiveness.

The parents of autistic child have a vast amount of information on the benefits and adverse effects of numerous drugs and other interventions which can be tried with their children. Parents are asked about the effectiveness of various drugs in the form of questionnaire. Three sections of medicines are Drugs, Biomedical/Non-Drug/Supplements and Special Diets.

Some of the drugs used in this treatment are Aderall, Atarax, Benadryl, Deanol, Clonidine, Clozapine, Diflucan, Prozac etc.
