Nutrition Action Healthletter recently named the 10 worst foods which are deadly to your diet. Of course, these foods are also some of the most delicious ‘comfort’ and convenience foods as well.
Nutrition Action Healthletter is published by the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest. They have no commercial affiliations and do not feature advertisements in their periodical. Their sole purpose is to inform the public about the health effects of different foods. They’re similar to Consumer Reports in that they have scientists and nutritionists to work on the data to support their claims.
Worst Food #1 – Pepperidge Farm Roasted White Meat Chicken Premium Pot Pie
One half of a pie has 510 calories and 9 grams of fat. Many people don’t read the label and will eat a whole pie. If you eat the whole pie, the fat intake goes up to 31 grams (including the hidden fat from the partially hydrogenated vegetable oil). This is much more than the recommended daily amount.
Worst Food #2 – McDonald’s Chicken Selects Premium Breast Strips
Who can resist McDonald’s, especially if you are out with the kids? One order includes 5 strips and contains 630 calories and 11 grams of fat. Hardly worth it for such a small amount of food.
Worst Food #3 – Cheesecake Factory’ 6 Carb Cheesecake
This dessert has the same amount of calories as the restaurant’s Original Cheesecake dessert. It has 610 calories and 29 grams of saturated fat (which equals one and a half day’s allowance of fat!)
Worst Food #4 – Dove Ice Cream
A half cup serving of Dove Ice Cream has 300 calories and 11 grams f saturated fat. The nutritional information is almost the same as Ben & Jerry’s or Haagen Daz.
Worst Food #5 – Starbucks Venti Caffe Mocha (20 oz. serving)
This treat comes with whipped cream as well and the sugary syrup which make the coffee taste so good. The calorie count is 490 and the fat count is 16 grams. Nutrition Action figured out that you can make a healthy treat out of this by ordering a tall size (12 oz.) and asking for nonfat milk and no whipped cream.
Worst Food #6 – Ruby Tuesday’s Fresh Chicken & Broccoli Pasta
The menu describes this dish as “fresh pulled white meat chicken, fresh steamed broccoli and penne pasta tossed in a parmesan cream sauce, topped with Wisconsin cheddar cheese and then baked”. This dinner contains 2060 calories and a sickening 128 grams of fat. Even if you only eat half of this dinner, it’s still a huge amount of calories.
Worst Food #7 – Burger King Quad Stacker
I still can’t believe that someone invented this meal. This sandwich has 4 hamburger patties, 4 slices of cheese, 8 strips of bacon, sauce and the buns. It weighs in at 1000 calories, 30 grams of fat and 1800 mg. of sodium!
Worst Food #8 – Campbell’s Chunky Select and red and white label soups
This brand of soup is crammed with salt. If you have one serving (half a can) you are consuming more than a half day’s quota of salt. For lower sodium brands, try Healthy Choice and Campbell’s Healthy Request.
Worst Food #9 – Chipotle Chicken Burrito
This fare has 1180 calories and 19 grams of saturated fat, plus 2900 mg. of sodium. The burrito is made with a tortilla, rice, pinto beans, cheese, chicken, sour cream and salsa.
Worst Food #10 – Mint Chip Dazzler from Haagen Daz
As Rachel Ray would say, “Yummo!” This dessert sounds enticing. The recipe calls for 3 scoops of ice cream, hot fudge, Oreos, chocolate sprinkles and whipped cream. It has 1270 calories and 38 grams of saturated fat (2 day’s worth).
As you can see, it’s easy to find the worst foods in supermarkets and in dining establishments. Thank you, Nutrition Action, for bringing this information out in the open.
