Very few of us know about the healthy super foods called sprouts. Sprouting is not a new concept. In fact, in many Asian countries including India, sprouts are known to people since ancient times. The process of sprouting is relatively simple. It begins with soaking the seeds or legumes in water, straining the water after 8 hours and allowing the seeds to germinate. The process that resumes after germination is called sprouting. This is when a visible small white stalk develops on the seeds.
A little moisture and light are enough to trigger the process of sprouting. You would be surprised to know that these healthy sprouts can be made at home with not more than 5 or 10 minutes of your time. After sprouting, these legumes and seeds become tender and can be eating right away. They can also be stores in the refrigerator for a few days and still retain their nutritious value. This is not possible in case of other vegetables, fruits or even meat. All these food products have an expiry date but sprouts can be stored for longer duration and have no expiry!
For those who are counting calories, dieting and eating moderate portions of food to control their weight, sprouts are the ideal food choice. Sprouts have lowest calories and highest content of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, calcium, good fats and carbohydrates. In fact, sprouts contain everything that could be found in any commercial health drink. The only difference is that sprouts are totally organic, non-toxic and contain no added preservatives.
Hence, why would you want to risk your health with all the unhealthy food and drink choices when sprouting is an inexpensive and easy choice? To add more flavor and variety, you can sprout different kinds of seeds and legumes together for a sprouts salad. You can add peas, garbanzo or pinto beans, Brussels, ground nuts and even the seeds of carrot and radish. These can be carried with you to work or school and consumed when you feel hungry.
Being high in fiber and protein, sprouts keep you feeling full for longer time. Hence, you would not feel the need to crave for fast foods or unhealthy snacks. Eating sprouts also helps to keep away from different allergies, stomach disorders and also keeps you safe from the risks of cancer. Since sprouts are in pre-digested form and contain simple starch, simple sugars and good fats, they are easy to digest and give you instant energy.
