How to Manage Your Time in College

Going to college can be very stressful and time management becomes very important when you have deadlines for five classes. It is important to manage your time effectively to get the most out of your day. There are several ways you can do this.

You should always make sure that in down time you have index cards to study from. Carry them with you wherever you go. (Okay, you don’t have to carry them everywhere, but if you are going somewhere where you know you are going to be waiting a while, it is a good time to bring them).  For example, you can read them while waiting for doctor’s appointments or using public transportation.

Don’t procrastinate, and when you start something push through it to make sure it gets done. Don’t put off any part of an assignment because deadlines come up quick. The worst assignments are the ones that are rushed through. They are not proofread and usually get the lowest grades.

You really should make a to-do list. Also, have a calendar or planner and mark down when all of your assignments are due. Mark them down on the day they are given. Get a jump-start on any assignments that you can.

Prioritizing is one of the most important things you can do. You have to know which activities in your life are of less importance than others. If school is your main priority, then some social activities might have to be cut out. It’s hard, but you have to know where your goals are.

Take good notes. This will help you easily and quickly study before tests. Try to review a little bit each night, so you don’t find yourself cramming the night before a big test.

One thing that I used to do when I was in college was to get an early start on reading assignments. As an English major, I sometimes had to read up to eight novels for a class. To keep up with the pace, I would begin reading early in the semester while the course work was the lightest. Make sure that when you do this, you make notes in your margins, underline, or highlight. This way, when it comes time to discuss the book in class you can refresh your memory quickly.

Most importantly, take some time out to have fun every once in a while.  A great way to keep track of things going on at your school or with your friends are social networking sites.  I personally prefer Facebook and the events page that they have.  This is a great way to get in the know and to make sure you don’t miss out on anything exciting at your college.

With these tips, every student should be able to successfully manage their time in college.
