The perfect summer cool off treat is of course ice cream and of course homemade is even more enjoyable, here is a great way to make homemade ice cream even if you don’t have an ice cream maker.
Ice cream in a bag is very simple to make, delicious and can be made by even young kids with little adult help, giving the kids a sense of accomplishment. Make these up, one for each of your kids and let them work on them while playing outside.
You will need:
- sandwich & quart zipper bags (seal-able)
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 6 tbsp salt
- 2 cups ice cubes (1 ice cube tray worth)
Start by putting the milk, sugar and vanilla extract into the sandwich bags. If you are working with older kids you can bring these items out to a table in your yard and let them measure out the ingredients for themselves. Make certain the sandwich bag is closed very securely.
In the outer bag put the ice and salt. The smaller bag with the ingredients will go inside the larger bag with the ice and salt. Both bags need to be completely closed, you do not want either bag to mix or leak.
With the smaller bag securely in the larger bag begin mixing and squeezing the bags. This is where your kids can have lots of fun. They can toss the bags around carefully so neither bag opens, spin it, kneed it, just have fun while they mix the ice cream and get their hands cold. After about 10-15 minutes your ice cream should be ready, you will notice that your ice cream has gotten more firm. Open the larger bag and pull out the smaller bag. Clean off the smaller bag well. If inside run it under the sink, if outside turn on the hose or sprinkler. Now you can scoop the ice cream out into a bowl or eat straight from the bag.
This is extra fun with a group of people. If you are having friends over, a pool party or even a reunion this can be lots of fun to do together around a table outside, lots of great opportunity for conversation. Of course the delicious finished product is worth the time!
