“Stomp the Yard” presents to us DJ Williams (Columbus Short), a Los Angeles college kid who’s a very talented krump dancer. Both DJ and Duron (Chris Brown), his younger brother, like to compete in dance competitions for cash, along with their crew that they call the Good Squad. But things don’t go well after they win one particular competition when their opposing crew decides to ambush them, resulting in the murder of Duron. DJ ends up getting arrested for assault and sent to reside with his mother, aunt, and uncle in Atlanta, Georgia.

Here he attends a fictional Black university called Truth University where his Uncle Nate (Harry J. Lennix) happens to be the physical plant director, he enrolls DJ in a work-study program where does maintenance work in an attempt to teach the boy some responsibility. DJ meets lots of new people at Truth University, both good and bad. The good: His dorm roommate Rich Brown (Ne-Yo) and a fellow sexy female student April Palmer (Meagan Good). The bad: The Mu Gamma Xi fraternity, a seven-time national stepping championship winner, and their leader Grant (Darrin Henson) whom happens to be the boyfriend of April. As usual in this type of plot, DJ finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time but with the right girl as he confidently steps on all of Grant’s toes to get to April.
